Umps Gone Blind
The advent of instant replay and multiple camera angles for every play has given TV viewers a chance to scrutinize every umpire's call in every game. Here are the five most notorious blown postseason calls of the past quarter-century:
1) Don Denkinger enjoyed a long and mostly successful career as a major league umpire. Sadly, he received many death threats and will always be remembered for one bad call he made in the 1985 World Series. In the ninth inning of Game 6 of the Series, Denkinger ruled Kansas City batter Jorge Orta safe at first base, even though replays showed St. Louis pitcher Todd Worrell, covering the bag, had seized the ball before Orta's foot arrived. The Cardinals were up 1-0 in the game at 3-2 in the series at the time, three outs away from winning it all. Instead, Orta's ill-begotten single opened the door for a two-run Royals rally. Kansas City went on to win the Series in seven games.
2) On October 9, 1996, 13 years to the day before Phil Cuzzi's missed call in Game 2 of the Yankees-Twins ALDS, Baltimore played the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium. With New York trailing 4-3 in the eighth inning, Derek Jeter hit a fly ball to right field. Right fielder Tony Tarasco reached up to catch the ball, only to have it snatched away by 12-year-old Yankees fan Jeffrey Maier in the first row of the bleachers. Umpire Rich Garcia ruled the play a home run, overlooking a potential fan interference call. The Yankees went on to win that game, the LCS, and the '96 World Series.
3) Perhaps no umpire in recent major league history ever called a wider strike zone than Eric Gregg did in Game 5 of the 1997 NLCS for Florida pitcher Livan Hernandez. With the series tied 2-2, Hernandez had the game of his life, thanks largely to Gregg's largesse. The Marlins starter rang up a career-high 15 Braves en route to a 2-1 over the Braves and future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. The final pitch of the game came on Hernandez's strikeout of Fred McGriff. The pitch was about a foot outside.
4) In the third inning of Game 2 of the 1991 World Series, with a man on first and two outs, the Braves' Ron Gant stroked a single to left field. Gant took a wide turn, drawing a throw back to first. Twins first baseman Kent Hrbek grabbed Gant's leg and hoisted him off first just after Gant had returned to the bag. First-base umpire Drew Coble ruled Gant out, saying forward progress would've carried him off the base anyway.
5) With one out in the eighth inning of Game 4 of the 1999 ALCS, Boston's Jose Offerman ran to second base on a ground ball to Yankees second baseman Chuck Knoblauch. Second-base umpire Tim Tschida ruled that Knoblauch tagged Offerman for the out, before throwing to first base to complete the double play. Replays showed that Knoblauch missed the tag by a wide margin, one of several notable blown calls in that series. The Red Sox went on to lose the game and the series.

そういや、LongoriaとTulowitzkiってLong Beach Stateで1年間一緒だね。Majorでも見てみたいかもｗ。あとBaseBall Cube眺めてたらLongoriaとNomarが同じ高校で、Barry BondsとTom Bradyも同じ高校だったよ。やっぱ、良い選手を出す何かがなるかな？ｗ。

Lidgeは今年BS多かったからクローザーとして不安の声が高かったけどこの試合ではなんとか逃げ切れたね。でも多分フィリーズファンは怖いんじゃないかな。

野球の道選んでたら今頃ジゼルと結婚してなかっただろうなぁ。。。。てこの二人世界一キュートで見ているだけで幸せが伝染してくるよ♪
あ、たぶん分かってると思うけど、今日からAFL始まってるよ～。まだ試合中だけどｗ。姉さんとこはstats見れば、きっと満足な内容じゃないかなぁ。10/9からはMexicoとVenezuelaでWinter League始まってるし。ウチは両方で15人Rosterに入ってた。

Iglesiasはまだ19だよね。若いなぁ。早ければ2年後くらい？ｗ。
そういや、最近知ったけど、ウチのMoralesって元々Pやってたんだって。Cuba Under18とUSA Under18の試合でCGしてHRも打って勝ったんだけど、その時の相手PがKazmirなの。その後から打者に専念してるから18か19からになるね・・（汗）。
それっておもしろいねぇ。そうか、リトルリーグのワールドシリーズで戦った同士がメジャーリーガーになってチームメイトってこともありうるねぇ。日本のちびっこ強いからこれからでてきそうだな。
